"Error reading paid from file" when stopping "program"

When trying to stop a service defined by a "check program" directive, the monit log shows an error:

"Error reading paid from file '<path>'"

Where path is the executable specified in the path portion of the check program directive. It seems like it's trying to treat the path like it's the pid file of a check service directive.
