From a quick look at the lex file it seems to me strings can be single or double quoted, and may contain backslash escapes. monit(1) suggests only double quoted, and makes no mention of escapes. Precise documentation would avoid guesswork with "sh -c 'date | mail -s \"example subject\" root'".
