failed protocol test [HTTP] at [hostname]:443 [TCP/IP SSL] -- HTTP: Error receiving data -- Success

I am using monit to monitor a few other servers on EC2. Monitoring the other servers has been working fine for years but once I started adding new ones, I get the same error on the CHECK HOST call:

failed protocol test [HTTP] at [host]:443 [TCP/IP SSL] -- HTTP: Error receiving data -- Success

where [host] is the dns to the server. It seems like an odd problem. I can CURL to the host just fine from the server performing the monitoring.

All servers are Ubuntu 16.04

Any idea what the problem is?
