for example set logfile $HOME/monit.log /etc/monit/monitrc:27: syntax error '$HOME/monit.log'

    This topic is interesting to me too.

    Are you running monit from commandline or as a daemon ? Which linux distro and which system-init are you using ?

    Monit does not support env variables in monitrc. For security reasons it might be a good thing and require absolute paths as Monit often runs as root. However for convenience I see the appeal.
