"config" settings keep resetting to defaults

I see the "config" settings reset to the default values (the alarms start loudly blaring out of my speakers). I thought it was a glitch, but now I see a pattern, it happens each time something new is added to the config json string. This time the "last message" time was added and my settings reset to default.

Is it possible to implement the config settings in such a way that they do not reset to defaults each time something needs to be added to the settings?

I added code to merge in the previous settings into the defaults. Give it a try.
