messages page requires manual refresh after switching browser tabs

the messages page stops auto-refreshing after switching browser tabs, requires a page reload to start refreshing again. there is no indication that refresh is happening or it has stopped, I can sit there for hours waiting for new messages to show up, they never will... K.O.

also sometimes it goes into "unresponsive" state. I suspect a javascript loop in getting new messages if midas.log is constantly updated with new messages (message flood). google-chrome Version 58.0.3029.81 (64-bit). K.O.
