Is it possible to use this with a joint with more than one degree of freedom?

Yes you just model them as two or more joints in series in your URDF but with zero sized links between them.

It also already supports planar joints.

It cannot handle combined joints where certain combinations of joints ranges inside the URDF defined joint limits are not valid.
