Audio stutters in Chrome on slow PC

Issue #18 closed

Environment:

  • em-fceux version: 0.3.0-alpha
  • Browser versions: Firefox 39.0+build5-0ubuntu0.14.04.1; Chromium 43.0.2357.130-0ubuntu0.14.04.1.1092
  • Operating system: Xubuntu 14.04
  • Computer: Dell Inspiron mini 1012 (Atom N450 CPU, whose IGP does not support WebGL)

Audio stutters in Chrome but not in Firefox. This is made worse by clicking the left triangle to open setting or the right triangle to open the ROM list. Non-corrupt audio is important because it helps the player become certain that he successfully executed a command in the game.

  1. Open Lawn Mower
  2. Open ROM list or settings on top of Lawn Mower

Expected: If opening the menu is found to bring emulation speed below 100%, pause emulation while the menu is open

Actual: Emulation continues with stuttering audio

This audio stuttering may be simply because the netbook doesn't have enough juice. My initial guess is that compositing in Chromium is not as efficient as in Firefox (possibly not hardware-accelerated). Using 'top' would reveal the CPU usage of Chromium...

I'll try to reproduce this on an old Acer Aspire One netbook.

I haven’t been able to repro this and a new version was released: https://tsone.kapsi.fi/em-fceux/ Does this occur on the new version? (Note, asm.js and software rendering are no longer supported – WebAssembly and WebGL are required.)
