Links not working in README markdown

Even the simplest link in my README markdown isn't working. For example, if I use

Test link

It displays as that exact text but with the link itself as a link. It does not display as a link with the indicated text.

[Jeff Smith]

I think this is because the README is restructured text. But even usin ght einternal editor doesn't indicate this problem.
