Sager NP8174 Not working

Issue #20 new
Joshua Austill created an issue

I didn't expect it to work, but I'll file my info and will be more than happy to help get it running. I'm a developer for a living so with some guidance I'm sure I can contribute back a fix :)

    I started looking into this-this morning, I added this to clevo-xsm-wmi.c

        {
            .ident = "Clevo P65_67HSHP",
            .matches = {
                DMI_MATCH(DMI_PRODUCT_NAME, "P65_67HSHP"),
            },
            .callback = clevo_xsm_dmi_matched,
            .driver_data = &kb_full_color_ops,
        },

    and recompiled and installed. It appears to detect now, but won't load because it isn't signed?

    joshua@joshua-Inspiron-3521 ~/repo/clevo-xsm-wmi/module $ dmesg | grep clevo [ 9.325840] clevo_xsm_wmi: module verification failed: signature and/or required key missing - tainting kernel [ 9.329511] input: Clevo Airplane-Mode Hotkey as /devices/platform/clevo_xsm_wmi/input/input18 [ 9.329623] clevo_xsm_wmi: Polling thread started (PID: 386), polling at 5 Hz

    I'm on Linux Mint 18.1, and apparently, I need to do something to get the kernel to load this as an unsigned kernel module? I'm not familiar with kernel development, so any advice on this I'll take. I'll start digging into it, but I'm kinda starting from zero. :)

    Ok, what a fun morning :) I love being a code monkey haha.

    I followed this guys suggestion https://github.com/patjak/mba6x_bl/issues/54 and did a manual insmod and the thing loads and works :) Even persists after a reboot. So I think I have this figured out for the NP8174 and Linux Mint 18.1. I think the PR for this will be just the code above and documentation for the insmod.

    I'd like your feedback before I fork and start preparing a PR though in case there is a better way to go about this. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy my MUCH easier on the eyes red backlit keyboard :)

    P.S., apparently the power button isn't rgb and will always be blue :( haha

    POST MORTEM EDIT: OMG IT WORKED!!!! idk what happened but it worked!!

    I working on the same laptop product ID (P65_67HSHP), having some trouble nailing down these last few steps. I'm wondering if you have more specific instructions, I've added the module to clevo-xsm-wmi.c, recompiled, reinstalled. Even went though your follow-up and "manually adding the module" seems to fail on the last step with the error that the file doesn't exist.

    sudo insmod /lib/modules/linux-image-$(uname -r)/extra/P65_67HSHP.ko

    wondering what else needs to be done or what else you may have changed to get this working. The keyboard is the last step I have to configure for my SO's laptop! please help me, obi-wan! :)

  4. Joshua Austill reporter

    Hey @figurehe4d , I'm glad you got it working! This laptop is literally the perfect linux laptop! I replaced my wifi card with one from Think Penguin because the intel that came with it was a pita. Now I have a laptop where everything works including the fingerprint scanner, card reader, webcam, rgb controls, etc etc. Let me know if you run into any other challenges!

  5. Joshua Austill reporter

    @figurehe4d

    Thanks for documenting those steps. I had to do even more because I updated my kernel :) I basically had to

    make
    sudo make install
    sudo insmod /lib/modules/$(uname -r)/extra/clevo-xsm-wmi.ko

    I'm using Linux Mint 18.1 so modprobing doesn't seem to work :( Hopefully our bantering will save someone else some work lol Note also that in linux mint the kerneal directory has a different name, and the name of the module installed is clevo-xsm-wmi.ko instead of P65_67HSHP.ko This may or may not be the case for other people depending on system config, I'm not really sure...

    Have a great day!

  6. bolog

    Thank you so much Joshua! I have a PowerSpec 1510, and thanks to you I have my keyboard colors working. It's a great machine, but I couldn't get the keyboard colors to work in Arch 4.15.1 . Full RGB in linux! I found out it was a rebranded P65_67HSHP, and it took a long time to find this and figure everything out, but I never would have figured it out if I hadn't followed your instructions. I only had to do one more thing for my specific situation:

        CLEVO_XSM_DEBUG("%0#4x  IN : %0#6x\n", method_id, arg);

    status = wmi_evaluate_method(CLEVO_GET_GUID, 0x01,
        method_id, &in, &out);

    changed to

        CLEVO_XSM_DEBUG("%0#4x  IN : %0#6x\n", method_id, arg);

    status = wmi_evaluate_method(CLEVO_GET_GUID, 0x00,
        method_id, &in, &out);

    otherwise I got an hw_mon error. Now it's smooth sailing, thanks to you.
