Language/Time Zone Selector

Issue #661 new
Federico Hernandez Nater created an issue

Working on a Case Study with an international customer caused me to be in the place of a customer wanting variety of language for deployment. I happened upon a post in our support pages where this was discussed.

Right now, the current solution to wanting to deploy with a different language via MDS is to use a script, such as the sample script linked in the aforementioned post. This option, among others, was discussed two years ago in a separate issue.

However, forums user jclbu (Jean-Claude, likely from Switzerland) brought up an interesting point a few months after: for international customers uncomfortable with using a script, a dropdown menu for selecting Language would be helpful. Two other users (matt06sg [Matthew Jason] & peterlund [Peter Lund from Denmark]) seemed to agree with Jean-Claude by liking his comment.

Jean-Claude made a quick mockup of what a dropdown could look like:

Using Preview, I’ve also made a quick mock-up, using Jean-Claude’s suggested categories and putting them in the context of the Options menu without disrupting the current layout:

Since it is something that seems like it could fit well within MDS, I’d like to propose a language selector in Options, in addition to the script that currently exists. Especially considering that the current sample script solution is effective, implementing those same script changes that facilitate international within Options to make those types of configurations more readily accessible seems like it would be beneficial to implement and test.

Within the Case Study I’m working on, a feature like this would also have been useful in solving the stakeholder’s problem—specifically with the language component. Needing to make different configurations for sale in international markets that speak other languages, as the stakeholder did, could be done faster with a dropdown selector than by using the sample script. Implementing this within Options would likely make deployment simpler for international customers and further encourage use of MDS internationally.
