It would be nice if an empty project could be created that can be used as a merge target for multiple "sub"-projects

Yes! You Can! :)

I changed the rules last week. Now you can create empty projects via the API. Simply upload a package.json with 0 dependencies. Currently this works only via the API. I will enable this for the WebUI by end of the week.

@jdoose I just enabled it for the Web UI as well and tested it with an empty package.json file.

Great! Wouldn't it be nice if there was a link/button "create empty project" additionally to the other "create..." buttons?
