This is a bit related to issue #6 and just using http://cdn.libravatar.org/avatar/https://seccdn.libravatar.org/avatar as gravatar URL might be a short term solution.

By using libravatar-api one could discover local avatar servers directly by using dns srv records, support sha254 hashes and photos associated with OpenID.
