Unable to connect to Chromecast

ServiiGo 4.0 Beta 3 Preview 2 on Android 2.3.7 (GWK74) CyanogenMod-7.2.0-v9

The Chromecast button shows up in the UI, and when clicking on the cast-button it shows the Chromecast device, name & description.

When clicking on the device to connect, the cast icon looks like it's connecting, the icon gets "filled".

But after a second or two, the icon disappears, without the Chromecast having been connected to the Receiver-app. The Chromecast still displays the homescreen.

The icon disappears from the ServiiGo UI only to reappear after several seconds (10-15).

Connecting to Chromecast from Google Play Music (v. 5.5.1511O.1148372) and casting music works just fine.

Versions:

  • ServiiGo
  • version 4.0 Beta 3 Preview 2

  • Android

  • version 2.3.7 (GWK74) CyanogenMod-7.2.0-v9

Logcat from Android device attached.

Google Play Music and YouTube use the old Cast SDK so the fact that they work means nothing sadly.

What happens when you use the official Chromecast app?

That logcat mentions an authentication failure, is your Chromecast rooted or something? Have your got anything on your device that might mess with Google Play Services?

Could you also confirm your chromecast software build?

Also is that with a Nexus S?

Just installed and verified everything OK with the official Chromecast setup app.

Chromecast is not rooted. Chromecast build 16664

This is with an old tablet called ZTE v9 so it doesn't run an official ROM.

I can't think of anything that would interfere with Play Services, I'm not running any special root apps that would alter the system.

Please can disconnect from the chromecast and then post a logcat of you connecting using the official chromecast app, followed by connecting using ServiIGo.

BTW, are you getting a "Failed to launch application" toast message when ServiiGo fails to connect?

  5. Christian Kaderud reporter

No - ServiiGo continues to work without interruptions after it fails to connect to the Chromecast. If you are in the Series activity and try to connect, it doesn't leave the activity, it just fails to connect, Cast-icon disappears from ActionBar, only for it to reappear after 10-15 seconds.

    (I'll get some more logcats)

Thats not what I meant. Looking at the code for the Cast library, it is supposed to show a toast message saying "Failed to launch application" if the app fails to fully connect to a Chromecast. I'm not expecting ServiiGo to stop working, but I am expecting that message to appear.

BTW, do you have another device, and if so can you connect to your Chromecast using ServiiGo on it?

  8. Christian Kaderud reporter

Yes, my Nexus 4 running stock 4.4.2 (although rooted) works just fine with the same Chromecast.

logcat-chromecast-app.txt Starting the Chromecast setup app on Android 2.3.7, trying to "Check for Offers" results in error (Unable to check for offers. Please ensure that your Chromecast is set up and ready to cast.) "Check for Offers" works from the Nexus 4. However, changing language and rebooting the Chromecast works from the app.

logcat-photocast-app.txt Trying to connect to the Chromecast on Android 2.3.7 from the Photocast app. From the UI it behaves exactly like ServiiGo, it looks like it's trying to connect, then the Cast-icon disappears from ActionBar and reappears a few seconds later.

OK so it definately appears to be a problem with the Cast SDK (which is part of Google Play Services) on your device. Will write up a bug report and get back to you.

Can you also use open up the Chromecast app on your tablet, select your Chromecast, try to change somsething that fails i.e. Check for Offers, then use Menu->Submit feedback report, and basically explain that you cannot connect to a Chromecast using apps that use the new SDK, that they start to connect and then fail. Also list the features of the Chromecast app that don't work.

The really weird thing is, even though both devices has Chromecast app v1.5.5, both installed from Google Play, the 2.3.7-device doesn't have the Feedback option.

I know this isn't your problem though.

The menu options available on the 4.4.2 device (under the overflow in the ActionBar, are: (top to bottom) is; Help, Check for offers, Reboot Chromecast, Factory reset Chromecast, Open source licenses, Other licenses, Submit feedback report.

On the 2.3.7 device when pressing the Menu-key; Help, Check for offers, Reboot Chromecast, Factory reset Chromecast, Open source licenses, Other licenses.

I have tried the 2.3.7 device in both portrait and landscape and the last menu option never shows, and I can't scroll the menu, it just isn't there. I think the Google devs forgot something :-)
