What are the advantages?

From my limited, two-year old experience with cartopy, I do not see many advantages. A major disadvantage is that they do not supply the geographical position of oceans etc. in the package, but depend on them being available on a web-server that is not under their control. This web-server changes its API about every year and breaks every cartopy installation until an update is available. This does not seem acceptable for pure maintainability reasons.
