ware never suggests that the superhero is dead. it is not that the superhero is alive in the way that the next x-men series would be, but that the idea of the superhero is only dead if the medium has no chance of replacing him with something more meaningful. the scene is not a condemnation of the superhero or the comics industry, rather, it is a condemnation of how the public has its perception of comics and then only what suits its interests. ware uses the superheroes suicide as a form of the umber-power, a way to have the nagging sense that this isn't who he is without actually having to draw upon its comic book origins. rather, he uses the real world, the medium of comics as the source of a character that is meant to offer the audience the chance of a similar lightness of being, an escape from the difficulties of the human condition. the ideal of the superhero is to be able to leave behind any real threat to individual self-actualization and to others, to be free of the burdens that the light and dark sides of the human condition create. umber power is not some special form of psychic or psychic-like ability. rather, it is the idea that any individual could possess and use to their advantage a sense of spirituality that doesn't come from the earth, but from the heavens; a gift from the judeo-christian god that would give the individual the strength to overcome adversity. by using the man in the white shirt and tie as the subject of his graphic novel, ware is positing that the natural desire for identity and individuality and the unnatural demand of conformity to cultural norms are equally damaging to the human spirit. super-man in a way represents a fiction of the gods, just like the god of the bible, and its eventual suicide represents the calling down of that power. but, in a far more specific way, every individual also represents a shadow of the gods themselves, one that should not hide the gift of individuality from those with the intelligence to realize it for who they are. 6a6f617c0c
