.mkv stutter on OS X but not on Windows. Possible solution inside.
I can confirm after trying a high bitrate .mkv on both Windows and OS X that the older Windows Machine outperformed the Mac and played back the .mkv smoothly without any stuttering on my Samsung TV, while the Mac played back with stuttering - especially noticeable on the audio.
I had a very similar problem with MplayerX until I requested for the developer to add an option to Enable Local Cache and option to Change The Buffer Size (so that it preloads enough information). I'm pretty sure that the problem is the Power Saver feature on the Mac and the Hard Drives falling asleep (cant be fixed on the operating system settings unfortunately).
I'll be happy to try out beta builds, please let me know.

On MplayerX the setting is called "Cache Files for Stream". The harddrives fall asleep and do not wake up again fast enough if the Cache (prebuffering of video) is set to a very low setting

this is not relevant. mplayerx is a software that runs on your Mac and renders the video, Serviio just streams the file over your network to the TV (which renders it). So the cache would have to be implemented on the TV side. Considering it plays ok on the same TV when streamed from the Windows box it must be related to your Mac environment (e.g. network card, connection, CPU, disk I/O)

not sure what kind of cache you're talking about?
