Build dated 20180508: Cannot go past opening crawl, no input accepted

Issue #357 resolved
swinford created an issue

Input does not work, and cannot go past opening text crawl on build 20180508. I had an older version installed, and was able to press Enter or Spacebar, and Escape, and have things happen. I updated to the latest release (XWVM_prealpha_20180508), and now none of my input is accepted, and once the end of the opening crawl is reached, I am left with a blank starfield image and nothing else happens. I am able to use Alt-F4 to cleanly exit. At this point, my only option is to watch the opening crawl over and over, or not test, hence leaving "major" priority.

If you're using an nVidia card, could you try upgrading drivers to the version released today (2018-05-09)? The previous nVidia driver version has a bug which causes unpredictable behaviour in XWVM and possibly other games.

I'm using Intel integrated graphics on an i5. Can you send my associated email address a link to the latest executables? I cannot access the update from within the game due to the issue I'm experiencing. :)

Please follow these step to try and resolve the issue, then tell us whether it fixed it or not.

    • Delete all contents of your currently XWVM folder.
    • Install the 20180508 build again on the same folder.
    • Run the game and attempt to get past the intro.

I performed all of those steps but retained the same behavior. My previous installation was in C:\GOG Games\XWVM; the new installation is in C:\Program Files (x86)\XWVM. I deleted both. When installing, I am not prompted for a directory to install to; it automatically installs to C:\Program Files (x86)\XWVM. I get the same results regardless of whether I start via the Start Menu XWVM icon or by running xwvm.exe via Explorer. I should note that I don't necessarily think xwvm is hung, as I briefly see the XWVM-styled mouse pointer when I press Alt-F4 to exit.

Please, follow these steps so that we can get your log file.

    1. Open a Windows Explorer.

    2. In the address bar, enter this address: %appdata%..\LocalLow\XWVM Team\XWVM

    3. Press Enter. The explorer will navigate to that folder.

    4. Upload here the entire output_log.txt file.

I see the game is having problems finding your X-wing install folder.

    Please go to %AppData%\XWVM

Open the XWVM.json file with a text editor

Remove entirely the line that starts with "xwingInstallPath" (It should be the second line).

Next time you start XWVM it will ask you to find the game folder. Make sure you find it and that it lists a certain amount of missions, briefings, voices, etc. Then press the button to select that folder and check if you reach any further.

This did it. The difference appears to be that the newer builds require the CD-ROM version to be available; my xwingInstallPath pointed to a GOG-based floppy (1993) install, which worked fine with the older builds. Once I removed that line from my config and installed the CD-ROM version, all was well. Is that expected behavior (i.e. the requirement of CD-ROM vs. floppy installation)? Thanks for your help, I look forward to continuing testing by playing!

The floppy edition should be recognized, but it lacks too many assets (in particular, sound effects) to be functional.

We hope to support it better in the future. But the amount of "fixes" it would require seem unjustified at this very moment, since whoever owns the GOG or Steam floppy version also owns the CD-ROM versions. And the chance for someone to actually install an original retail floppy edition from floppies on a modern PC must be infinitesimal.
