If attacked. This applies to anything with a neutral IFF.

Neutrals only fire at their Primary and Secondary targets then. What happens with escorting ships? Will they attack imperials or rebels that get close or that attack their escortees? Will the wingmen in a squadron of neutrals attack the attacker of their leader? Or they will ignore it? If the neutrals have the Attack Enemies order, they will still not attack rebels or imperials?

Ok, so from my tests I've found out:

Neutral escorting ships escorting a neutral Cap ship will not attack enemies that are attacking the ship they are escorting.

The next test was with strictly Starfighters. It seems I was wrong and that neutral starfighters will fight back (Imps or Rebels) if they are being targeted (using the Pri/Sec targets) and have the "attack all enemies" order.

The next test was to see if a neutral cap ship with the sit and fire order will fire back if targeted with Pri/Sec targeting (as it didn't attack with the Circle waypoints one). The cap ship did not fire back at all.

EDIT: Escorting neutral starfighters will not attack targets attacking the ship they are escorting. Neutral Starfighters will fight back if targeted and they have the "attack all enemies" order. Neutral Cap ships need Pri/Sec target in order to attack/fight back.

I've been looking through all of the mission files with neutrals and I'm seeing some with the protect order and others as well. I will continue investigating to see if there is any other behavior from neutrals.

Y-wing GOLD was attacking me in TOD5M12. The blues are supposed to be allies in this mission and they don't attack in the original unless they attack the ships they are escorting (they are set to loose escort FRT Jess 6 and FRT Jess 9). Gold 1 kind of didn't attack and was escorting but sometimes it would attack my wingmen.

RandomStarfighter notes that ships with "Loose Escort" or "Close Escort" will cause them to attack IFF Rebel if IFF Rebel ships is targeted by the player.
