open up _is_userland_descriptor to all attributes

Mike Bayer repo owner created an issue

it makes no sense that we only look for descriptors here. We should allow any attribute that isn't something known to be part of a mapping to remain - strings, etc.

this is high priority since i want to get this new behavior tested as soon as we go to betas.
