Camila Adam Significance of Composing a Draft Before Writing an Essay – Guide 2021

Created by Austin Carter last modified

There comes a point in students’ life when they are expected to be better at college essays. Teachers want them to write professional and error-free essays because their grade depends on those essays.

I know we all have been there, so; you don’t have to get scared. Just stay tuned until the end because I have interesting tips to share.

Essays are important in one’s academic life and their importance can be acknowledged in a way that one has to be very good at essays to get admission to university/college. Your essay must have that “Wow” factor to be eligible for college admission.

Anyway, don’t worry about essay writing because I am sharing some tips down below so that you don’t have to struggle the same way I did years ago.  All you need to do is memorize, practice, and keep practicing until you get better.

Writing is a lengthy process and involves several steps from prewriting, drafting, proofreading to writing a final paper. Students usually find these steps very hectic but for a well-structured paper, these steps are necessary.

Why is drafting necessary?

As the name suggests, drafting means rewriting. This idea frustrates students but then again, one has to gather information, analyze sources and proofread the rough draft before writing an error-free paper.

I bet you don’t want your professor to grade you F because of a poorly written paper, right?? That is why it is required. Also, as your educational level increases, so does your responsibility to write a profound, well-researched, and credible paper.

There was a time when this idea was so off-putting for me that I would hardly pay any attention or put in any effort. I would always ask someone to write my paper for me because why not? Being a high school student is so much fun, right? You are good at denying your responsibility.

Once I got into college, I became a changed person because I realized that I cannot escape this unfortunate fate if I have to graduate with flying colors.

What is a draft?

It’s a rough sketch of your paper before compiling your material and proofreading it. You have to rewrite until you have sorted all the loopholes in your paper. For better grades, it is mandatory. Some students have the habit of correcting their mistakes as they write and find drafting a time waste.

I highly disagree because you cannot always know your mistakes from the get-go. You have to sit back and reread the paper so that you know, you are clear in your message, and you have selected the topic and the sources for it.

It isn't a short process as you have to give it a complete thought before considering it a final draft.

If you have enough practice, you will see how writing a draft is a different game. Considering my aversion to drafts, previously, I used to hire someone to write a paper to write articles for me. Why wouldn’t I? I was against drafts and drafts have given me a tough time in my college life.

I am wholeheartedly a team draft now.

What do drafts do?

They help you organize your thoughts into words.

When I used to write my essays in one go, I would always find myself rewriting half of it or sometimes, the entire essay. That was tiring and infuriating at the same time because a lot of my time was spent rewriting the entire paper. I thought to myself, “Is this really what I want to do for the rest of my semester?” “Why am I doing this to myself?”

These questions gave me the reason to write drafts. Why?

The draft gives you the idea because when you start writing paper, it’s like a blank canvas and you fill it with ideas but from those ideas, you still have to narrow your focus to one particular topic. Just throwing some ideas on paper won’t make one a writer.

Readers prefer those ideas that are organized properly and are given concrete words. The scattered thought in your head would look much better if it is given a proper structure and conveyed through meaningful words.

Drafts allow you to remove errors.

You cannot write your paper in one go and that too, an error-free paper. You have to proofread and remove errors and sometimes, you have to rewrite the whole paper. Drafts allow you to rewrite and improve your writing.

They allow you to erase a rough idea and replace it with a more refined one.  The professional writers did not become professional in one day and even then, you will find them writing drafts and editing their pages because it is unrealistic to think that one can write a profound idea without editing or proofreading.

I hope you have understood the significance of drafts. I am not done yet, there is still more that I want to share with you guys so, stay tuned.

Target Audience

A great way to increase essay grade is to write according to the target audience.  A 40-year-old might not like what a teenager likes. So, make sure you have the target audience in mind while writing essays. It is also important to choose a topic that is apt for a specific audience.

Integrate Proper Research

Students shouldn’t take this point lightly because it is important to write well-researched essays to improve grades. Finding sources from multiple and credible sources is super important.  You have to do that before getting started. The right research allows you to present your idea coherently and adds knowledge about the subject you are writing on.

Keeping these tips in mind will certainly help you in improving the content of your essay.

You can look up articles, books, websites, magazines to look for the right information for the topic you have selected.

Write down Important Ideas.

Writing down important ideas will give you a head start to organize your ideas. It will give you enough to make a clear image of what you want to write into your essay. Write the main arguments of the source that you want to use in your essay.

Planning is better than scattering ideas.

Writing drafts also means that you have to preplan what you want to write in the paper. You will choose an appropriate topic, find sources, analyze these sources and highlight key points. This will make an image in your mind of what to write.

If you still think it’s not that worthy practice, consider writing an article or an essay without writing and planning. Try it as an experiment and then try writing it with planning and you will see a clear difference. Ask any pay for essay writing service and they will give you the same answer because as I have mentioned above, it is unrealistic as well as time-consuming.

Remember, drafts are a lifesaver so make sure, you don’t use this as a one-time practice but make it your habit to write drafts before getting started.

All these tips are really useful if you accept them with an open mind. Don’t worry about the mistakes that you will make in the process. The first step is to accept them and the second step is to work on them.

Work on your mistakes without panicking, you will see improvements in your grades. Essay grades are the foundation of making you a great writer so, don’t think essay grades aren’t important.
