QHY CFW3 filter wheel not recognizing ascom configured filter list

Issue #155 resolved
Former user created an issue

I am having an Issue with the QHY EFW3. It will not remember the filter presets that I configure in the ascom driver. When I go to Options>Filter wheel and click import filters from Filter wheel it adds a list of 16 filters. they are numbered only and None of them are the seven filters that are actually installed I delete 9 of them and manually rename and input auto focus time. This then shows up in the Equipment tab under Filter wheel. If I disconnect and then reconnect it forgets all the filter presets again.

This is version 1.8 final release.

    Hi,

changing the list inside the options->filter wheel tab, won't change the values in the ascom driver. If you need to adapt those, open the setup dialog of the qhy ascom filter wheel and adapt the filter presets there. Inside N.I.N.A. the values set inside the ascom filter wheel are not used, but the ones set inside the options are used instead.

I talked with QHY today and mentioned this issue. They said that after the CFW3 is plugged in and powered is applied, it initializes itself by turning the carousel to count the number of filter positions. If the ASCOM driver is queried for filter names, it may send back more positions than there really are because it has not finished counting them yet. Can you confirm if this is the case in your situation?

Makes no difference. I plug it in and wait for it to spin around and, I guess count the slots. Then I connect to the wheel in ASCOM and the same thing happens.

Ok, that's all I needed to know for now. I will try to see if I can work through this with them.

The ASCOM driver inspector tool still says I am on the 2.0 driver, even though I downloaded and installed the 2.0.4 and even tested the 2.0.3. I wonder if their link is broken and it just keeps sending me the 2.0 version?

Hi Ezra. I just sat down with Dr. Q of QHY and we were able to reproduce this issue. The problem is that the ascom driver is indeed returning properties for more filters than there really are. They will fix this in an update. In the meantime I will investigate some ways to detect this condition and maybe guard against it

I don't think there's any update yet but what you can do is enter your filters in the Settings -> Equipment -> Filterwheel panel of NINA.

NINA uses its own saved filters because ASCOM doesn't provide all information always (and to plan Sequences without a Filterwheel connected). If the Filterwheel responds correctly (i.e. when NINA tells it to move to position 2 it'll move to position 2) then there shouldn't be an issue and you can disregard the ASCOM filter settings altogether.

Yeah, that can be done, but it shouldn't have to be and I am hoping that QHY updates the driver. ASCOM interface still says I am using the driver 2.0 and the CFW2. This is not correct and the latest driver on QHY's website for the CFW3 says it is supposed to be 2.0.4 and 2.0.3 added support for the CFW3. There is similar behavior in Kstars/INDI so they are really dragging their feet on both platforms. I can use my ZWO EFW in the meantime, but it has some issues with the mechanical connection that leaves me with almost no space for getting the imaging sensor into the CFZ of the reducer/flattener.

On another note I finally got to use the software last night and it went pretty smoothly. I hope to compile my notes and share them with you guys if you are interested.

No luck. I see two new options for the QHY wheel. I also see a newer ASCOM settings tab but this does not have a port option and will not connect. See images below:

That was the original one and it connects but reads the filter wheel as having 0-15 slots for 16 total and will not remember the slot names. Even if I hit the import from filterwheel button. The ASCOM setup for this FW selection lists CFW1 and CFW2 as choices but I am using a CFW3. The CFW1 option only has 5 slots. It also lists COM port options.

Ok, I note in the CFW3 configuration window that it reflects the prior 20181104 version of the driver. I’m going to assume here that this new driver would have a more recent date (such as within the past day or so) so I’m wondering if you’re accidentally still using the older driver?

  12. Oaklandish

When I installed the linked driver you posted. It said it was removing the old driver. Then I reconnected and all of the options that I have available are what you see in the images linked. The last three images are the same as they had been prior to the new driver install today. The first two images show the new driver options and ACOM setup interface.

Hi Ezra, I received an updated driver installer from QHY today. It’s the same version and hence the same file name as the one I linked above. The checksums are different, so hopefully this updated 2.0.5 has a working driver in it. Could you uninstall your current one and retry with the one lined above? This should only work for USB-connected CFWs.

  14. Dale Ghent

Oh good news. I just got confirmation that it was compiled with AnyCPU which means that it should work with a 64bit NINA (or any other 64bit ASCOM client app)

It works! Thank you so much for reaching out to QHY. I have to select the QHYFWRS232 and configure the filters in ASCOM. After that it connects and shows the correct number and names for the filters. I have tested it directly connected to my NUC USB3 port and through the USB2 port on the bak of my ASI1600mmPro.

  16. Oaklandish

Yes I think I am running the 64bit version. When I get back to the office I'll check it out to be sure.

    NOTE

QHY has posted updates to both the RS232 (USB) and 4-pin ASCOM drivers for the CFW filter wheels. If you are experiencing this issue, please update your CFW ASCOM driver(s) from the latest on the QHY website.
