Framing Wizard - Export to Stellarium

Issue #547 new
James Paul created an issue

There is a button on the Framing wizard to import coordinates from Stellarium. It would be nice to also have a button to export coordinates to Stellarium along with FoV and rotation. This causes Stellarium to select the coordinates and display a framing rectangle matching the specified FoV at the matching rotation.

What is the practical advantage of this as one may already use any number of display sources in the Framing Wizard for the purposes of framing already?

The convenience of 2-way coordinate syncing with Stellarium is not solely for framing purposes. None of the display sources in the framing Wizard have Stellarium’s features to display custom landscapes. I have my actual view of the sky from my scope position displayed in Stellarium, so I can easily see exactly when targets clear obstacles such as buildings and trees for all azimuths. This makes it vastly simpler to determine time windows for imaging than the graph for angle above horizon.

I could make the argument that the existing import button is simply a convenience. One could simply search for or enter coordinates manually. Since import exists, it makes sense to me to provide similar convenience in the other direction. Obviously there is already code for using the Stellarium REST API for import. Why not do it in both directions? If the convenience is enough justification for the import button, it should be fairly trivial to implement the complementary convenience for export.

Another practicality is for PCs that do not have internet access. When imaging remotely, internet access may not be available. In my personal case, I block my PC running NINA from general access to the internet. This requested feature would aid in framing when no images are available in the Framing Wizard.

I haven’t submitted a request for another place to use this feature, If the code is implemented for this feature in the Framing Wizard, it could also be added as a sequencing option to export to Stellarium on each target change. This would allow realtime planetarium tracking of the object currently being imaged, to the utter joyful glee of onlooking friends and family and crowds of avid astrophotography session livestream fans, shocking the astrophotography hobbyist community with NINA’s savvy and technical prowess.
