Can't break blocks in survival mode if breakFar=false

There is nothing else installed besides the MultiMC launcher. This happens regardless of what tool I have in hand, what upgrades I've consumed, or what block I'm trying to break. If setting breakFar=true then it starts working.

Here's what I've got set in my config. Also, creative mode works just fine.
