Feature Request: Schema Browser

Issue #2443 duplicate
Kevin Poorman created an issue

Scott,

Once again, I find myself indebted to you, and your work here. it’s absolutely fantastic.

This past week, I found myself leaving IC a couple of times a day to the dev console, of all things, to open up the ‘object’ view. I was thinking a wonderful enhancement might be have a pane? (not sure of the correct terminology) that allowed me to pick an object, and see it’s schema. ie: object fields and their types. A sort of data dictionary.

If there’s already such a thing, and I’m just a n00b, please do take some time to mock me.

I imagine seeing this resolved as a duplicate of such an old enhancement request that hasn’t received any attention won’t be encouraging, but as you can see, there’s a small number of votes against that one across that span of time. My general response has been that the combination of the extensive code completion for SObjects (particularly used in SOQL queries) – including the SEL and SEL* live templates – combined with the actual renderered skeletal interfaces of those SObjects in the OST helps to mitigate the need for a dedicated query builder. Not saying that’s a valid response as I know that some folks have expressed an interest in something more point-and-click, but that’s mostly been the direction of the discussion regarding such a feature.

Feel free to vote on #590 and even to route others to do the same, particularly providing feedback on what use cases would be (better) solved by a dedicated schema browser. I’m not at all opposed to implementing one (it would actually be quite simple) if there’s sufficient interest and well-defined use cases for it.
