GMail login

When I try to log in to my GMail account through the T3 Gmail reader plugin (MENU>Plugis>Gmail reader, I get the wonderfully ungrammatical and even more wonderfully uninformative error message: "error in gettings gmail, may be label search empty, check internet or check login data and selected label from settings(menu)"
.
Does the GMail plugin work for anyone? Do I need @gmail.com
at the end of my username in the setup, or doesn't it matter? I've tried both.
I can log in to the account from Firefox on my Mac without problems.
Also, very helpfully, the plugin gives you the same message whether you've logged in successfully and there wasn't any mail, or if the login failed. I send myself some mail so that there should be mail.

I added some debug code to GMail Reader and it looks like the underlying problem with GMail Reader might be the same as the Flickr problem:
GMail] get_unread_msgs <urlopen error unknown url type: https>
It looks like this could be related to the Flickr bug
