Motor turns on by itself intermittently when PAS>0 (Bafang BBS02)

Issue #194 resolved
Vadim created an issue

Hello!

Issue description
When the display is on and the motor is not engaged (i.e. you stopped / parked), the motor turns on by itself, which causes the rear wheel to rotate and the bike to start riding.

This is what the app shows during the issue. 27W and 0.5A is typical, but my vary up to 54W and 2.5A.

The issue was discovered out of the box, and neither setting change eliminated it. But we were able to pinpoint it to PAS levels.

Repro level

The issue IS reproducible

  • with f/w 2.5.10 (out of the box) and 2.5.23 (after upgrade)
  • not immediately, but after some time (within 5-10 minutes)
  • when PAS>0; and the larger the PAS level, the more power is applied
  • with both modes (Road/Offroad), although it’s more prominent with offroad (i.e. more power is applied with offroad pas 3 when road pas 3)
  • with any display setting, and with multiple bafang settings (e.g. tried to change Basic - Current Limit, Pedal Assist - almost all.
  • with the app connected and disconnected
  • after powering off the display and unplugging the battery

The issue IS NOT reproducible

  • with another display (SW102)

Motor

Bafang BBS02 750W 48V

Notes

This renders the display barely usable. If you stop at a traffic signal, or leave the bike parked near a wall / tree and neither turn off the display nor set PAS = 0, the bike will start riding.

    Hi Vadim,

I am really sorry to hear you are experiencing such issues and thank you very much for such a great report.

To me, it sounds like a hardware failure. If you say that with another display it works as it should then most likely it is something wrong with the EggRider.

Could you please get in touch over email to arrange a replacement?

    Hi George,

Thank you. My friend will send an e-mail shortly (I’m helping him with all comms:)

BTW, we’ve noticed the display was getting hot, 45C when not moving. Is this ok? What’s the normal operating temperature?

  3. George Banea

It does depend on the voltage and outside temperature. I think for a 48V battery a 30-35 degree celsius can be normal

I had the same issues on my 2x BBS02b-500W/36V with the 2 eggriders I own. I exchanged motors(with the BBS01b-250W) but that did not help for this perticular issue. But lately it stopped maybe because of a software update???

Actually, we have tested this with the second motor, albeit after creating the issue. Reproduced the problem as well.

Our firmware versions are specified in the bug report.

Hi Vadim, now that I am thinking about it.

Could you please try with v2.4.11_beta which is in the downloads area to see if the same issue happens?

  7. Vadim reporter

    Hi George!

Well, it’s too late now, as we’ve already shipped the display back to you.
If the problem persists with the new display you’ve already sent, we’ll try that.

Upgraded resulted in similar. Downgrade to 2.4.11 provided same result. Display also runs hotter than expected with low backlight setting enabled. 500s display does not recreate symptom.

    Hello, George!

I’d like to follow up on the replacement display (sorry it took so long). It works all right, the issue is not reproducible, the temperature is normal.

It came with the firmware version 2.5.10. We haven’t tried other versions yet.

    Thanks,
    Vadim

    Hi Vadim,

I would really appreciate if you get in touch over email as I was trying to find your return to be able to have a look at your display?

I remember you said it was for a friend but can’t make the link.
