UPDATE 2 (2022-10-20): Official EggRider update on BT connection issue

Thank you to those who took the time in submitting the BT connection issue form. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience that has been caused by this issue.

After extensive investigation, it seems like due to component quality the BT connection issue might still occur. Some reported that this issue occurs with cold temperatures. Apart from BT connection display should function normally. Until we resolve the problem our recommendation is to keep the display configured such that it is not requiring the mobile app (functions such as immobilizer, road restrict, start up with road should be disabled) and if you need to do a connection try to do it in a warm place and close to the display.

After extensive investigation, we now concluded that it is a hardware issue related to the display Bluetooth antenna. It's our top priority to improve factory testing to prevent these types of issues from happening in the future.

We really appreciate your patience and help in solving this issue.

Currently, the factory is working on the fix and the estimated production lead time is 5 weeks + shipping.

We realise that this may take some time but those affected by this issue are our top priority to receive the display replacement as soon as we get new displays in stock.

Alternatively, we can issue a refund if you bought directly from the EggRider shop or otherwise get in touch with your shop.

However, it will make us sad to see you leave our community without having the chance to test EggRider's full capabilities.

Original issue report

I’ve IOS 11 phone and followed all instructions of troubleshoot manual etc.

Eggrider app v2.6.05

Display firmware v 2.5.61

When bleutooth connects it only for around 2-3 minutes and disconnects again. Connecting after that is impossible.

Ive updated firmware and reinstalled the app. Also used different iphone. All permissions GPS etc allowed.

Error message: impossible to connect

Any suggestions?

    Seems to be temperature related. After first start when the device is cold it connects.

    After 2-3 minutes it gets instable and disconnects. I’m afraid its a hardware issue.

    Could you please a video/screen recording of the problem? I recommend you to try the fix below and tell me if that worked.

    Meanwhile, when having connection issues, I suggest the following:

    Changing the app-related settings that could cause this issue:

    As well as the system settings. Sometimes if the battery optimization is turned on, the app is not allowed to run in the background, hence the sudden disconnection of the display.

    Every IOS version is slightly different, but here are the settings you should look for:

    1 - Low Power Mode (Settings App - > Battery - > Low Power Mode) needs to be off

    2 - Background App Refresh (Settings App -> Hushed - > Background App Refresh needs to be ON

    If Background refresh is greyed out in the ON position, go To Settings App - > General - > Background App Refresh - > Turn on the option for the system, and then you can turn on / off by app.

    Besides the Bluetooth trouble I have it works great on the EU Radmission. Completely different bike. Love the parameters which can be adjusted.

    For the record I have Iphone 11 latest update.

    1. Low power mode (setting app-> Battery->) does not exist.
    2. Background App Refresh (Settings App -> Hushed - > Background App Refresh) the app eggrider is not listed so no setting possible.

    Coming back to the troubleshooter.

    9. Turn on bluetooth (do not pair) is not relevant because the app only pairs when the app is started.

    10. Turn on GPS is not requested or possible in Iphone (Location is on) . In the app the GPS is turned on.

    Exactly the same here, also in iPhone. Bike: RadRunner 2. Connection immediately lost. No chance of settings change at all. I am so tired of crappy electronics shit! If you bring out a device like the EggRider V2, you have to provide a working App as well! That simple! As Mr. Oskamp already said ALL the suggestions do not apply for iOS! I expect or better DEMAND and working solution for iOS and not only for Android Shit! I am really angry!

    I would like to know if eggrider is working on a solution to solve the issue. After giving all information, videos etc from my side it’s annoying that there is no reaction other than following the trouble shooter. For sure my iphone is not the problem. If it’s the app there must be a bug. If it’s the eggrider hardware it’s warranty.

    Long story short what are you going to do or working on? Knowing that I am not the only one makes it a serious issue isn’t it?

    For the record I am an automotive engineer specialized on digital electronics so please take me serious. I know what I am talking about.

    Same Problem. Very annoying. I have two ebikes. Both have an Eggrider display, on the first day both displays connected to the Iphone. Now no display connects to the iPhone. I can't adjust anything as a result. The display is therefore unusable. I hope that the problem can be solved.

    I am also not able to connect via Androidphones, after connecting via Iphone.. Maybe an Issue with the Activation?

    After waiting a few minutes (it seems to be, that the Display hast to be switched off, for an “longer” time) i am able to connect with android, everything seems to work right now, i havent tried to connect with the iphone again..

    The inactivity and missing transparency is embarassing. We basically have a product that can no longer be configured. Major features are completely broken and the creator does nothing for weeks. No clear communication, no time horizon for a fix. Nothing. Simply unbelievable.

    First of all, we want to apologise to everyone that had to deal with this annoying issue. We are really grateful for your understanding, patience and help in solving this problem.

    At this moment, all our tests point to a hardware issue. We are working on a solution with the factory but we are afraid we will have to replace the affected displays.

    Our understanding is that this issue only affects the Bluetooth connection. If you are able to configure your display you can use it while we work on replacements.

    We would kindly ask you to bear with us a little longer until we sort out the logistics. We will get back to you as soon as we can with more instructions.

    Is there any way to fix this issue besides waiting/filling out a form for a replacement?

    Mine is stuck at firmware update, and it keeps diconnecting. It was doing the same thing before and I thought a newer firmware will fix it. Now I’m stuck on this update page.

    I had the same issue and was stuck in the upgrade scenario. I was lucky that it finally somehow worked (after 100 tries) to install FW 2.5.61 (what was a downgrade). In the successful case, I kept the phone very close to the device, not sure if this makes a difference or is important, though. Before, I had disconnected the display from Power for an hour or so and it was <10 °C.

    Eggrider claims that the root cause is a HW issue. Unfortunately, they do not tell us, what suspected kind of HW issue it is. Is it thermal issues, bad quality of the PBC, Wrong antenna, whatever ... no information.

    I’ve tried disconnecting power, putting them closer together, restarting the phone, etc. Nothing worked.

    I think I will try using the Chrome method to update it to the old version 2.5.61. I hope it’ll work better than the EggRider app.

    I was able to go back to normal by updating to 2.5.61 using the nRF app. The Bluetooth disconnecting issue seems to be gone, but I’ll go on a 20 miles commute tomorrow and report back. It’s too bad I won’t be able to update the new firmware as it brings back the issue.

    amazing..
    I just received my eggrider yesterday (after the obstacles and paying the fees in the german customs) and it was crazing me nuts due the continues interruptions this morning during the setup.
    Just googled it and found this thread. I have the same issues (Iphone 12 Pro & Bafang Mid Drive) as described here and in the video of the form.

    Hats off! I like the transparency of the developers. It seems, that I had just bad-luck, due I ordered on the 27th April. This issue is been confirmed a few days later.

    Anyway, as long they fix it somehow, I am not going to blame these guys. Gonna fill out the form.

    Yes. Only the nRF App was able to complete the FW update for me since it seems to have a decent retry mechanism. But, it did not solve the basic connection issues for me. After the downgrade, I have now a usable display that is no longer hanging in FW update limbo. I could program the most basic setings with A LOT of patience. There is simply no reliable connection possible.

    Just got my Eggrider V2 from Fasterbikes.eu. I have the same problem. Can’t connect. I’ve tried using my iPhone and an Android. Not working at all. This is very dissapointing. I consider myself tech savvy, so this is not a user error.

    Just got an order from Luna and all is great with the exception of Bluetooth connection to display. Thought I was losing my mind. Also consider myself tech savvy and this was not making sense. A few successful connections but to call the connection intermittent would be a gross overstatement. After an attempted firmware update, the screen is only displaying the firmware update mesage. Motor still operates.

    Is there a way to verify the display I received in my order from Luna has the Bluetooth antenna issue?

    Should I alert Luna to my issue as well?

    Update 2

    Was able to downgrade w nrf app like cristoph above. Also noticed connection is more stable when the unit is powered off for a good while and cold(meaning I can connect.for more than a few seconds but not longer than 1-2 minutes). As it warms, the connection becomes 100% impossible.

    Also reached out to Luna about exchange and they are asking for a video of the problem.

    Received a new display. Thanks to Tony from Luna for getting this sorted out(with incredibly fast shipping and a return packet set up and ready to go! 👍)

    In my case its temperature related. Just by chance I found out that when the eggrider is heated up in the sun (its 30 degrees now) connection was possible. At least I could do some settings. Next morning 20 degrees no sun no connection. Maybe a heat gun can do the trick? anyway wanted to share this for those in trouble resetting or flashing.

    Im still waiting for replacement.

    Same issue started today saying it’s “Impossible to connect” when it worked fine yesterday. Connected my old phone to the app and it worked, new phone that previously worked no longer does. All permissions given, cleared cache, turned on and off and even reinstalled the app. After getting my old phone with a broken screen connected i updated the firmware in hopes that might be the problem but the new phone still doesn’t want to connect and tries 3 times before it tells me it’s “Impossible”.

    @Gerrit Oskamp I have the same issues since a few days with my already replaced device. I got the replacement end of june and had no issues so far.
    Since a few days (it got colder) I have major difficulties to connect. Probably temperature related. It’s a pitty.
    @George Banea did you get other complaints and can you confirm this? Do you need investigation material (serial no, videos etc.)?

    @Gerrit Oskamp I’m in the same situation as Tefo, got the replacement end of June and was working with no issues until a week ago with low temperatures these days. Further more, when I get my bike from my heated garage it works just fine then after few minutes riding at 10°C it disconnects and impossible to reconnect until back to the heated garage with 20°C or so. I was expecting operating temperature of -10°C to 50°C at least and we’re far form it.

    It is worth mentioning that keeping phone bluetooth off for 10-15 seconds sometimes it solved such issue and to check that on display doesn’t show “No ID restart”

    Same issue. Purchased direct from Eggrider end of August. Thought it was my phone at first, but now seems to be a common issue based on this thread. Have completed the form as advised. It’s a shame because the Eggrider itself delivers the exact performance advertised, but the app is unusable and also makes it very hard to adjust the settings given the connectivity drops while making the adjustments.

    I have the same issue. 100% related with ambient temperature! In basement where I keep my bike I have 21C and I can successfully connect with the app. However when went outside where temperature was 18C I got that connection error in the app. Here in central europe temperature will soon drop significantly and I hope that display will still even work at below 0C!

    I did another test and It looks like that connection is ONLY possible precisely at 20C or above. If temperature is slightly lower for example 19.5C then connection is no longer possible. My conspiracy theory is that there is some weird hardcoded temp limit at 20C in blutooth chip.

    As in my previous comment, I had the same issue and received an other replacement few weeks ago, it works perfectly, I’ve been riding at -20°C without any issues.

    Bluetooth chip in eggrider is wierd. In autumn I could not connect at temperature slightly below 20C but it works fine now in temperatures below 0C? Even at -10C I did not loose connection.

    I got my replacement a few weeks ago and tested it the last days. No issue so far and working as specified. Thanks for great after-sales!
    btw - the bafang-one at least, is orderable again. Just ordered another one for one of my other bikes.

    I tested again yesterday because it is now very cold everywhere in our region.
    Result: no Bluetooth connection
    Then I held my wife's hair dryer for 1 minute and then tested it.
    Result: Bluetooth connection works perfectly.
    I hope the problem will be solved by spring.

    @Gartenruhe I think it would be helpful and less confusing for everyone if you could also mention which batch you are referring to, or if and when you had yours replaced

    I can't say which batch my Eggrider is from; It is not a replacement device. (Can this perhaps be read from the serial number?)
    I bought the Eggrider from Cystalite Europe in September last year.

    If you try to update firmware and it fails, it will always start in update mode until you successfully complete the update. We suggest the following steps: - keep the EggRider display for 1-2 hours in a warm place, preferably above 25°C - try to update, if it fails try again a few times if you notice always starts from the same % go to next step - try to update to a different firmware version (this will force update from 0%)
