negative not working with e when typing

when I type - in trying to use e to raise something to the tenth power, for example 4e-3, it treats "e" as 2.718... not as *10^
However, when i copied this dash - from your site, it worked as it was supposed to.
why are "-" (typed) and "-" (copy/pasted) different?
using version 0.12 on mac osx
