Atlassian told me that they will not accept Plugin v2 add-ons anymore and not even JIRA Syntax Highlighter as one last plugin.

That means, a macro plugin module type for JIRA needs to be implemented by Atlassian for Atlassian Connect (and then develop a JIRA Syntax Highlighter making use of this Atlassian Connect macro plugin interface).

I have created a corresponding request. Please vote and comment for Macro plugin interface for JIRA Cloud!

Response from developer relations @ Atlassian concerning how to get a plugin available on JIRA OnDemand.

"We are no longer accepting "Plugins v2" plugins from third party vendors in OnDemand. The way forward is to write an add-on using Atlassian Connect. The Atlassian Connect project is still in development and now is a good time to get involved if you want to ensure your add-on will be compatible.

That means, that JIRA Syntax Highlighter cannot be easily transfered to OnDemand. It needs to be re-developed as a Atlassian Connect plugin.

Problem with Atlassian Connect for non-commercial open source plugins is, that you need to have hosting of the plugin somewhere (outside of JIRA OnDemand instance). Atlassian is not providing such a hosting environment. It needs to be established by the plugin vendor. But this costs money, so it needs to get commercial to get money from the users.
But also needs to add support, because you need someone who acts on problems in hosting.

Hello, I use OnDemand service and would like to see your add-on there.

What about making onDemand version be paid (with appropriate price)?

I think it would right and honest: if you use own platform and support it yourself - use it for free (as now), but if you want some work will done for you - pay.

How much traffic would such a hosting account move? I wouldnt mind sponsoring if it means you can keep it opensource and noncommercial. Traffic on amazon and azure are cheap.

I had a closer look at Atlassian Connect, but by now Atlassian Connect does not support macro plugin for JIRA. So, currently there is no technical way to implement JIRA Syntax Highlighter via Atlassian Connect.

I got in contact with Roy Krishna, one of JIRAs Product Manager to discuss further options (make it available as Atlassian Plugin v2 for OnDemand or via Atlassian Connect).

    Will keep you informed.

We would pay a one off fee for this plug-in on OnDemand. I can't see it being a $10 a (we only have 3 developers so def not worth that) but would pay like $10 (or even £10!) as a one off fee. :) I can't see the hosting fee being that much. A lot of hosts will allow you to host for free if your an open source project as well. ;)

To be honest I don't see why Atlassian doesn't just replace their crap existing system with this. That would completely solve the issue! :D Especially if they made it possible to include your own config files to add highlighting to any code in the future.

Well I suspect this will be the last straw for us and we won't be moving to OnDemand. :|

Maybe once they make OnDemand as useful (or better) than privately hosted copies we will re-consider. I have voted and commented as such. Lets see what happens. :)
