RegEx filter extraction

When selecting the option "Extract the strings in the source group"

Using RegEx ^
[(.\*?)]

Sample text in file.txt [extract this text]

Source group number 1 nothing gets extracted.

Is this correct behavior?

Sound like a normal behavior: there is no string to extract in [extract this text]. You probably meant to use "Extract the content of the source group", which seem to work ok.
