Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible for an Academic account?

Academic licenses are free and intended for members (students, professors, and so forth) of colleges and universities for use for their labs, assignments, and projects.

How do I know I have an Academic license?

Simple! Log in, click on your profile and head to Bitbucket Settings -> Plan Details. You can see if you have an Academic license under 'Current Plan'.

What advantages does an Academic license offer over a standard Bitbucket license?

Besides unlimited private repositories that all licenses allow, Academic licenses allow students and teachers to work with an unlimited number of collaborators. In contrast, a standard free Bitbucket subscription limits the number of collaborators to five.

How do I apply for an Academic account?

Sign up with your academic email address and we will automatically give you an academic license as long as your email domain matches our list of accredited academic institutions.

I signed up with my academic email address but didn't get an Academic account?

While our list of accredited academic institutions is large, there are many out there we don't have. In the event you aren't automatically given an Academic license, simply provide details of your academic institution by requesting a Bitbucket academic license and we'll get you up and running.
