pybtex only produces a LaTeX file

I've started using pybtex as a substitute for bibtex and biblatex. However, I noticed that, when I launch

pybtex -l python -b <backend> paper.aux

with any backend different from latex, it always produces a file paper.bbl with latex output. Instead, when the command is

pybtex-format -b <backend> bibliography.bib bibliography.<ext>

everything works fine, and I get an output according to the chosen backend
