Frequently Asked Questions for XNOISE

1. How do I add media to xnoise?

To make music or video available in the library of xnoise, just add some folders via the 'Add or Remove Media' dialog in the 'File' menu. The respective folders will be scanned for media files. These files will then be available via the media browser (left side of the window for RTL langages). If you just want to play a file, just drag it from xnoise's library (media browser) or your file manager on the tracklist (right part of the main window for RTL languages).

2. How do I play music or videos in the tracklist?

Double click the respective track, or press the play button and the navigate to the desired track with the Forward/Next button.

You an also keyboard navigate to the desired track and activate it by hitting return or space. More keybindings can be found here

3. How get the best unity integration for xnoise on Ubuntu?

To have a good integration with Ubuntu's Unity it is recommended to deactivate the 'Compact mode' in the settings. This will make the global menu available with xnoise.

The settings dialog can be found via the AppMenu (in compact mode, upper right corner of the main window): 'Settings'

The settings dialog can be found via the 'Edit' menu (in normal mode): 'Settings'

For more integration there is a UbuntuOne music store plugin available for xnoise. After installation, you can activate it via the settings dialog on the 'Plugins' tab. The ubuntuone plugin is not tested for regitered users, because the author never bought music via this store. However it should be working fine. Quicklist entries are available!

4. Why doesn't xnoise show the album art from my local music folder?

For quality reason xnoise is not automatically choosing image files from the media folders. It is however using embedded album art and it is downloading album art from LastFm.

Last fm album art is only automatically fetched if you play one of the tracks of an album.

After scanning the media library, a special deamon is started for a short time. This deamon check the media files for embedded images and it finds album art in the media folders.

For the future, there might be an option for automatic mass downloading album art and a possibility for the user to choose an image file as album art.

5. Error Message : The name org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1 was not provided by any .service files (g-dbus-error-quark, 2)

Xnoise uses the freedesktop standard dbus thumbnailing interface. The program 'tumbler' implements that interface. Ths is not a hard dependeny, but if you want to avoid the message, it is recommended to install 'tumbler'. If you don't want to install that program, xnoise will still work as normal, but you might have to visit your video folder with nautilus to trigger the generation of thumbnail pictures.

6. On Lubuntu there was a reported output of

Cannot connect to server socket err = No such file or directory
Cannot connect to server request channel
jack server is not running or cannot be started
(above 3 lines are repeated couple of time)

GstError parsed: Configured audiosink audiobin is not working

and a user message "GstError parsed: Configured audiosink audiobin is not working."

A user reported this was fixed after he installed and set up gstreamer1.0-pulseaudio

7. I installed xnoise for the firs time but the output is silent. What to do?

Due to a missing default parameter in xnoise version <= 0.2.17 the preamp of the equalizer is set to zero, if xnoise is started for the first time. You have to set the preamplification manually once.
