merge w/ upstream

It is planned since the inception of this fork to try to get it into upstream eventually, but I wanted to make sure everything works. Lately the only thing that was blocking me from taking it to upstream was issue #6, but the recent research revealed that it's likely something that can't be fixed without working with upstream
