Sorry, I didn't describe the issue well. I thought I had a description here but I guess it didn't save.
When enemies carrying armour are shot, all remaining pieces of armour they have are dropped in place and remain as independent objects in the sphere.
Here's the remains of a fighter immediately after being shot:

This was a more general issue with the armour model. Fixed in pull request #31.
