Purpose

To provide you, the CMDR, all the necessary information to get started with assisting the Community in mapping the Galaxy of Elite: Dangerous. This document will provide you with an understanding of how the coordinate calculation is done, tools available to you, and (if available) some information on how to use those tools.

Why is the Community Mapping the Galaxy

The Community is being forced to map the Galaxy because we want to be able to see outside of the game where we have visited, what is around us, and who else may have visited it. Unfortunately Frontier Developments has not yet been able to provide the Community with any 3rd party APIs. Thus the Community is forced to determine a System's coordinates, and record any information about the System themselves.
