Jacktrip-doc / Device registration issues

Device registration issues

A common issue during the initial device registration, when access http://jacktrip.local/, you will either

  • get an error
  • or it appears as if nothing happens, the page stays the same.

In order for you to be able to access http://jacktrip.local/, please check the following

  • the jacktrip device is power on
  • the jacktrip device is connected to a network
  • BOTH the jacktrip device and your computer (where you use the browser) MUST be on the same network. Also make sure you are NOT using a chromebook.
  • and there is only ONE jacktrip device on the network

DO THIS IF YOU CAN: it will very likely solve your problem. Connect your computer with a wired connection. So that BOTH your computer and your jacktrip device are using wired connection. This will ensure both are on the same network.

Checklist

  • Make sure that currently, no other other jacktrip device is power on, connected to network.
  • Power on the jacktrip device. Wait until you see the internal red light light up (see this picture)
  • Check the network connection to make sure you can see the green light (see this picture)
  • Now access http://jacktrip.local/. If problem persists, go to next section

Ensure that both jacktrip device and computer on same network

The easiest way to make sure both jacktrip device and your computer (where you run the browser to access http://jacktrip.local/) are on the same network is

  • to also connect your computer using a wired connection to a port on the same router or switch

If your router is limited by the number of ports or you have access to just one port, you can try to use a switch such as "NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Switch (GS305)" to essentially "split" into multiple ports.

If you cannot connect your computer using wired connection, see next section

Find the IP address of your jacktrip device

If we can find the IP address of your jacktrip device,

  • we can access it directly as http://1.2.3.4
  • instead of http://jacktrip.local

One way to be able to find the jacktrip device IP is to connect it to a monitor, you will need a cable with the right type: HDMI to Micro HDMI Adapter, such as this one. If you are able to connect the jacktrip device to a monitor, you should see the IP number on the monitor screen. The IP number should look something like this: 192.168.1.10. If you do have the IP number, try access your jacktrip device using that IP number

  • for example: http://192.168.1.10

If you cannot connect your jacktrip device to a monitor, we will try a technique called ip scanning. You will need to install some additional software on your computer

Once install, following the software instruction to perform a scan, look for entry name jacktrip or one that starts with letter "ja", copy down the corresponding IP number (should look like this format 192.168.1.10), try access the device directory using the IP number

  • for example: http://192.168.1.10

Notes: the jacktrip device MAC address should have a prefix dc:a6:32 or b8:27:eb
