Bitbucket Cloud migration Q&A

With support for Atlassian Server products ending in February 2024, many of you are likely evaluating or planning your migration to Bitbucket Cloud. To help you navigate the migration process, we've put together a list of frequently asked questions that we hear from customers. Each section below has several resource links to help you learn more and start planning your migration.

As with all our Cloud tools, with Bitbucket Cloud, you’ll have immediate access to our latest features and bug fixes as and when they are released. Installs, upgrades, and patches are managed seamlessly by Atlassian. This means that your internal teams save time and costs because they don't need to manage servers or product updates. This is one of the biggest benefits of using cloud tools.

If you need an answer to a question that is not on this page, please post your question on the Atlassian Community (click on the 'Ask the community' button on the top right).

Bitbucket Cloud is hosted on the same platform that powers 250,000+ customers across our products including Jira Software and Confluence. Security and privacy of your customer data is our top priority. Beyond platform benefits, Bitbucket Cloud offers several benefits.

  • Best-in-class Jira integration: Bitbucket Cloud has deep integration with Jira and the Atlassian Cloud ecosystem. Developers can see their Jira issues on their work dashboard, and reply to issues via the built-in Jira UI. Several Jira automation features save developers time and increase development visibility across stakeholders, product managers, designers, and other teams that are part of the software development process.
  • Ship quality code: Collaborative code review features built-in to help developers ship quality code.
  • Integrated CI/CD: Bitbucket Pipelines is Bitbucket's integrated CI/CD solution that sits alongside your repos. Or you can continue using Bamboo, Jenkins, or other third-party CI tools with Bitbucket Cloud. You can also connect to your self-hosted runners and run builds on your own hardware via Bitbucket Pipelines. Learn more
  • DevSecOps: Native integration with Snyk so you can view security scan results right within Bitbucket Cloud.
  • Secure & Complaint: Being on the Atlassian Cloud platform means centralized security and governance across your org, and enterprise-grade security like SOC II and encryption at rest.

How does Bamboo and Bitbucket Pipelines compare? Can we use Bamboo with Bitbucket Cloud?

While both are CI/CD tools, Bamboo is meant for customers who require an on-prem CI/CD tool. However, you can also connect Bamboo to Bitbucket Cloud.

Bitbucket Pipelines is Bitbucket Cloud's native CI/CD tool and comes built-in with Bitbucket Cloud. With Bitbucket Pipelines, you can manage your code and workflows in one tool instead of having to switch back and forth between tools. It also gives your developers autonomy and flexibility to manage workflows themselves, if they need to.

How do I migrate from Bamboo or Jenkins to Bitbucket Pipelines?

There is no automated process for migrating from Bamboo/Jenkins to Pipelines. The effort involved will depend on how complex your Bamboo plans are, and in particular how much they rely on Bamboo tasks vs. scripts.

We recommend that you start by recreating one Bamboo plan in Pipelines. This will give you a better idea of what is involved and help you estimate the overall migration effort for your specific situation. To use Pipelines your source repositories must be hosted in Bitbucket Cloud so migrate some repos over and then test migrating a workflow. Here are some steps on how to get started with Bitbucket Pipelines.

Note that you can configure Bamboo or any other on-premise CI/CD tool to use a Bitbucket Cloud repository using webhooks. Here is the process on how to connect Bamboo and how to connect Jenkins to Bitbucket Cloud.

How do I migrate my Bitbucket Server apps (and their data) to Bitbucket Cloud?

Your first step will be to identify whether Cloud versions of the apps you need are available. Next, we recommend you reach out to the Marketplace Partners behind those apps to determine what migration paths exist.

Some features that are made possible by Server apps may exist as native Bitbucket Cloud features so you won't need to migrate those apps. If the feature you need is not already available on Bitbucket Cloud, you can check the Atlassian Marketplace for apps and integrations that extend the functionality of Bitbucket Cloud.

Where do you host Bitbucket Cloud data? Can I choose to have my data hosted in a specific region?

Bitbucket Cloud data is hosted on AWS servers in the US. We don't have data residency capabilities at this time, however, it's on our radar for 2025. Watch out for updates on our public roadmap.

Will Bitbucket Cloud ever go down for maintenance?

Occasional maintenance periods are announced in advance in a banner at the top when you're logged in to Bitbucket. This helps your team plan for the maintenance time. We'll also show it on Atlassian Bitbucket Status and post regular updates. Track our recent uptime records here.

How are disaster recovery and backups handled in Cloud?

We treat reliability and security very seriously. Here's some information on how we handle backups in Bitbucket Cloud.
